Dr. Jennifer L. Murphy has spent her career specializing in the behavioral treatment of individuals with chronic pain. She received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University and joined the Tampa VA in 2005 where she was tasked with developing a pain program for Veterans returning from the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2011, she became Clinical Director of the VA’s only inpatient Chronic Pain Rehabilitation Program, which tapers participants off of opioid analgesics during their 3-week admission. Since 2020, she has served as the VA’s national Director of Pain Management.

Through her work as the VA’s Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain Master Trainer and lead Therapist Manual author, over 1000 VA clinicians have been trained in the use of CBT-CP. In addition, Dr. Murphy has been the VA’s primary champion in the development and implementation of interdisciplinary pain programs, which have increased from 2 to over 20 in the last 10 years. She has authored many peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and is an investigator on numerous funded trials examining the most effective approaches for pain management. She routinely provides consultation to organizations and healthcare companies regarding how to best incorporate behavioral pain strategies into their care.
